Fight Club is one of those films that people either remember forever or forget about in all of their confusion as to what was actually taking place. It’s a film that has been criticized by many and praised by many more. Some see it promoting violence. Some see it misunderstood. Some see it as overdone, others see it as one of the best films of all time. It is certainly a movie that needs to be seen.
Edward Norton plays an automobile company employee, a typical consumerist stuck in the routine. His character (we’re never really sure what his name is) is unable to sleep, however, which eventually has him attending support groups for people with cancer and various other threatening diseases. Here, he meets Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), who disrupts his ability to find comfort in the support groups. Next, while on a business trip, our main character meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), a soap salesmen. After returning home from the business trip to find his apartment destroyed, Norton ends up staying with Tyler. Soon, they start Fight Club, which begins as a way to explore their own masculinity and to find freedom from capitalist, consumerist society. Fight Club expands to encompass greater aims as the number of members expands, and our main character finds himself increasingly unsure as to what these plans are, what role he had in them, and who he actually is.
Please note: this movie is violent and gory at times.
Things to think about/look for:
- What is the movie suggesting consumerist society is doing to people?
- Blue collar vs. white collar workers
- Why a fight club?
- Is this movie promoting violence? Why or why not? What is the purpose of the violence?
- Reality
- Who is Tyler Durden? Who is our main character?
- Masculinity
- What is Marla’s role in all of this?
- Is this movie anti-feminine?
- How can we find true freedom?
- Terrorism
- What do we take away from the movie?
