Zodiac – Nov 22nd

zodiac-copy.jpgNovember 22nd is Turkey Day (Thanksgiving) here in the US, but the SAC Movie continues nonetheless with the final movie in David Fincher month. Zodiac is another Fincher movie about a serial killer, but this time Fincher focuses much less on the killing and much more on the detective story and mystery surrounding the killer. The Zodiac Killer was a real serial killer operating right in the area that I’m now living (and near where Cassy lives as well). The Zodiac Killer was unique in that his murders were committed over a long period of time and he sent countless letters (often containing codes) to the police and San Francisco area newspapers. The movie follows those people that are trying to solve this case and find the Zodiac Killer.

Zodiac stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, and Robert Downey Jr.

Things to watch for/think about

  • The style and atmosphere of the film
  • How is this film different than the other three Fincher movies?
  • Do you think the ending is satisfying? Why does this kind of ending tell us?

  1. from Pak Ibnu: steve, have u seen zodiac? how’s ur comment bout that?

I have seen it, and I guess what I would say is that you’re getting a very different movie from the last three David Fincher movies that you have watched. This one doesn’t have the urgency of the other three, and is much more methodical in its approach to the story. However, I think this approach works perfectly with the story and with the ending. Zodiac doesn’t have as much buried beneath as the other films, but that’s because it’s taken straight from real life and that’s how Fincher seemed to want the movie to feel. So maybe I would say that it’s not as exciting, but that I thought it was a cool approach to take that worked well with the content. I also really enjoyed the sets and the way it was filmed.
