In the Meantime

First of all, Happy New Year! Second of all, Good luck with your UAS!

Since there are still currently no SAC Movie showings, I thought I would at least share some of the movies that I’ve seen recently, and perhaps you can share some of yours.

Films are listed in order of how good I thought they were.

1) Munich
I’ve been meaning to watch this for a long time and finally did. It was just excellent and really showed both sides of the situation (past and current) much better than I thought it would.

2) The Battle of Algiers
This is an old Italian/French movie, but does a great job at being “real” about its portrayal of Algeria’s very real struggle for independence. Might be hard to find there in Indonesia.

3) Farenheit 451
Another old movie. Interesting cinematography and use of color. Great performance by the two main female characters.

4) Election
Great performances from both the big names and the unknowns in this interesting high school election race movie. I saw it as a movie of “blinds.” Blind ambition, blind morality, and blind optimism.

5) Stardust
If you like fantasy movies, you’ll probably like this one. It’s funny, creative, not-too-serious, looks good, and even has some good lessons to share. I wasn’t expecting to like this one as much as I did.

6) Ratatouille
Better than Pixar’s last movie, Cars, but doesn’t seem to have the depth that some of Pixar’s other movies have had. Still, a guaranteed good time.

7) A Mighty Heart
It would be interesting to get your opinion on this movie about an American journalist’s kidnapping in Pakistan. Overall a good movie, especially for dealing with a touchy issue like this one.

8- The Descent
I don’t watch many horror movies, but this one wasn’t bad and did a good job of scaring me pretty good on multiple occasions. Unfortunately I thought the final exchange between the two main characters to be unnecessary.

9) Superbad
I was hoping to find a really funny movie, but instead found a sometimes funny movie with far too many crude jokes. Some might find the main characters endearing but I just didn’t. Still, as comedies go this one is still decent and I appreciated the way that the film ended.

10) Curse of the Golden Flower
Although the imagery was good, this movie disappointed me greatly. What exactly are we supposed to take away from that ending? Plus, the fact that it is not historically accurate doesn’t help.
